Part 1: Listening

One of the modules of IELTS is the listening test. The duration of this test is 30 minutes with 40 questions.A variety of question types are used, chosen from the following: multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labelling, form/note/table/flow-chart/summary completion, sentence completion.Here you would have the audio of conversations; you would have to answer some related questions after listening.

Listening requires a lot of patience and concentration. It is not as simple to become a good listener as it might sound. One way of enhancing your listening skills is through rigorous practice. Part 2: Reading

The second one is the reading section consisting of 40 questions. The time allotted is 60 Minutes, where you would have to read a passage and answer related questions. This test includes three long texts that range from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical The reading section is all about comprehension skills. To start, you can turn to articles in newspapers and comprehensively read them. You can also go online and find reading samples for practice. Be precise so that whatever you are reading should give you a clear idea of the behind picture.

Part 3: Writing

Topics are of general interest to, and suitable for, test takers entering undergraduate and postgraduate studies or seeking professional registration. There are two tasks:

  1. Task 1- you will be presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram and asked to describe, summarise or explain the information in your own words.
  2. Task 2 -requires you to write an essay in response to a point view, argument or problem. Responses to both tasks must be in a formal style.

The writing section could be one of the challenging parts, as the various components need detailed correctness. You also have a word and time criterion that needs special attention. Try to work on vocabulary and grammar. Part 4: Speaking (11–14 minutes)

  1. Part 1- the examiner will ask you general questions about yourself and a range of familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies and interests. The time consumed here would be 4-5 minutes.
    2. Part 2- you will be given a card that asks you to talk about a particular topic. You will have one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. The examiner will then ask one or two questions on the same topic.
  2. Part 3- This is a follow-up of Part 2. These will give you the opportunity to discuss more abstract ideas and issues. This part of the test lasts between four and five minutes.
